Prior to the welcome event on Thursday night at the Australian War Memorial I spent part of the previous day and today meeting and chatting with fellow family history bloggers and other conference attendees so I will start with an update on my first 2 days.
I had a wonderful dinner on Wednesday Night at the Banana Leaf Restaurant. The dish was called a Yaka Ge Kaama and is Sri Lankan “Pub” food. It was a large plate with plenty to eat. I was totally full and even did not have desert. Those who know me better will understand this is quite a rare ocassion. The company, fellow bloggers Sharn White and Pauleen Cass, Official AFFHO blogger had great meals also. The spicy taste was just to my liking.
Today I went over to the National Library to check them out. Not have many Australian Ancestors I do not have rolls and rolls of Microfilm I wish to check out. However did find what may be the ship my grandparents and my mothers 3 older siblings sailed to New Zealand on, call the Remuera. Interesting as the first suburb I lived in when I moved to Auckland was called Remuera.
The discovery is more a case of elimination as I have been looking on and off for a while now. The issue with the record is that except for my grandfather having two unclear initials the other 4 travellers are listed as Mrs, Mast., Miss, Mast. It is the first time I have found five travellers together, the correct surname, about the correct year and even the order of the children’s sex by descending age is correct. So it is the best find so far. A Find My Past Find.
Finally to the welcome event for the AFFHO Congress at the Australian War Memorial. Numerous people attended enjoyed themselves chatting away and walking around the displays. I think the location of the event attracted many of those attending. Thanks to Jill Ball for my blogger beads and for introducing me to so many people!
Usually I Instagram, Facebook or Tweet food from Conferences I attend as it is really a passing part of the whole event. For example, “here is one I prepared earlier” from last years Problogger conference, at the QT on the Gold Cost. These deserts and fruit were even posted on social media by the chefs and not just the attendees.
Tonight, with phone low battery, again, and not wanting to muck around with my backup battery that I was carrying in my hand bag, I missed out doing an Instagram Post so here is one of the nice ones I tried. Tasty!
It’s been a good week so far.
Yes the conference was great!
