This post is about the 4 prizes I want to win in the Family History Month Prize Draw for individuals and why I selected them. First I cover why you should check out the National Family History Month 2014 sponsors too.

Family History Month challenge number 1 is to “Visit the NFHM sponsors’ page and consider entering the prize draw for individuals“.

Why should you check out the National Family History Month 2014 Sponsors?

I know some of you do not like being pushed into buying products however without sponsors for events such as the National Family History Month these events would not be possible. Let us be realistic here. They are businesses trying to sell their products. We are the target audience and they are aiming straight at us.  However, this is not a simple, short term, one on one relationship. Sponsoring is about the community, our family history/genealogy community. The more the sponsors gain from the relationship the more likely they are to sponsor again next year. Sponsorship is aiming for a win-win so both parties benefit.

National Archives has hosted the annual NFHM launch since 2006 – building long term relationships.

They help promote #NFHM2014 via promotions, social media and more.

I try to give fair consideration to sponsors. I might not always purchase a product straight away so I try to support them in other ways too. I hope you will have a look at the sponsors and support them where you can too.

Disclaimer: I thought should put in a quick disclaimer to say no one has paid me to support our sponsors and any views I have about products or services are my own.

Ways to Support Sponsors

Consider the purchase of their products and services. At this time it might also be nice to say you purchased because they sponsored the #NFHM2014. Or if you own their product or have used their services, be an advocate for them if you are happy to recommend them. It is important to be honest about any product or services you recommend as others are relying on your views.

Not buying just now? You could support sponsors on social media by liking them on Facebook, Google+ or other places they hang out. Leave a message that you followed them because of their #NFHM2014 sponsorship.

Help others understand services better with experiences you have had in the past. Explain how you have found a product that helped you or how a service may help a member of your society.  You are not hard-selling, just explaining any benefit that might be of interest because you know they are interested in XYZ, for example.

Mention them in one of your own presentations or blog posts. Add a thank you on social media when they have helped you through a brick wall or leave a comment on their blog pages.  Just a small thank you can mean so much.

When going to events or after events you attend, post on Facebook, Google+, Twitter or Instagram using the hashtag – #NFHM2014 to promote the month. Here is one I created earlier on Instagram when I attended the Unlock Your Style book launch on the Sunshine Coast. I am happy to support a Nikki Parkinson’s from StylingYou as she has shared her blogging knowledge with me.  I try not to be pushy and many times there is no product even showing.

Summary of Family History Month Prizes I am hoping to try and win:

Find My PaFind-My-Past-Logo_TM_spot_com_aust Subscription because I do not have one. Not that I make full use of my Ancestry subscription ( just slipped that one in there) though I thought that having different information to research might be an incentive. It’s a way to try out the service for a year as when I get trials I always seem to get busy and not test out the service fully.

genEbooks vougenEbookscher – I found a book I would love to buy. See post on the download a free book challenge.  There was other material that looked interesting and being an eBook I can take them away with me.

Momento photo book voucher – I havemomentologo_horiz_srgb_web-v2 been thinking of creating a photo book so this is an ideal option for me. I have the scanner all set up however it does not love me presently. But that is another story that will be a challenge.

SHHE research services – SHHE logoI think that just a few hints from Shauna Hicks would be of great benefit and what better way to learn from her than to get 5 minutes of her time. Family History Month Prizes such as this is a one-off opportunity to break through that brick wall.

Hope that was not too greedy.
